The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has set a deadline for the 10 IPL teams to submit their retained player lists ahead of the mega auction.
On Saturday, the IPL Governing Council also unveiled the retention rules, including guidelines for player retention and the Right to Match (RTM) card options.
The IPL Governing Council recently announced that franchises can retain up to six players, including one uncapped player.
This decision allows all 10 IPL teams to retain players with no restriction on nationality. The Right to Match card has also been reintroduced to allow franchises to retain more players.
Teams Allowed Six Retentions For IPL 2025 Mega Auction
The IPL franchises requested the BCCI to permit the retention of 5-6 players to maintain the core of their teams. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that franchises can select their retention and RTM combinations for the IPL 2025 mega auction, which is expected to occur later this year, possibly overseas.
“It is at the discretion of the IPL franchise to choose their combination for Retentions and RTMs. The six retentions / RTMs can have a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players,” Jay Shah informed in a statement after the IPL general council met in Bengaluru on Saturday.
BCCI Reveals Deadline For Franchises To Announce Retained Players
The BCCI has announced that any player making his international debut on or before October 31 will be considered capped for the IPL auction. Each franchise can retain a maximum of six players, including five capped players (both Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players.
This decision will impact a few IPL teams' auction dynamics as the Indian cricket team will play a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh at home next month. Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar have been included in the team and might make their international debuts for India.
"It may be noted that for retention purposes, any player who gets capped on or before October 31, 2024, will be considered a capped player," the release from the IPL reportedly read.
IPL 2025 Mega auction schedule is yet to be released
The date and venue for the upcoming IPL auction have not yet been announced, but reports indicate it may take place outside of India, likely in Dubai, Doha, or Saudi Arabia. Last year, the IPL mini-auction was held at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai about 25 days after the retention lists were submitted.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced an increase in the total salary cap for IPL teams. The new salary cap is set at Rs 146 crore for 2025, compared to the previous total of Rs 110 crore in 2024. The decision comes as franchises prepare for the auction under these updated financial guidelines.
