Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody said that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) should consider looking for a new captain in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Tom Moody stated that Virat Kohli isn't the first-choice captain for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, but he can be a solid backup option.

The Bengaluru-based franchise appointed Faf du Plessis as captain ahead of the IPL 2022. Du Plessis guided the team to the playoffs twice in the last three editions but failed to clinch the title. The franchise might consider releasing the former South African batter before the IPL 2025, considering his age.

RCB Might Bid For Pat Cummins - Tom Moody

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Tom Moody said that Royal Challengers Bengaluru might bid for Pat Cummins in the upcoming auction. Moody stated that RCB should search for a new captain in the auction. He added that Faf du Plessis did a good job as captain and player for the RCB.

"They (RCB) might bid for Pat Cummins, who's been released by Sunrisers as you don't know what the situation is going to be. He (Kohli) is a good fallback option, but I think they should look in the auction for a captain," Moody told ESPNCricinfo.

"I think Faf showed the value of his captaincy and also just allowing Virat Kohli to be the batter that we know he's capable of being. Just allows him to unshackle and just be himself with a bat in hand," he added.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru made a remarkable comeback to reach the playoffs in IPL 2024, but their journey ended with a defeat to the Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator. Virat Kohli was the Orange Cap winner with 741 runs at a strike rate of 154.69. Du Plessis was the second-leading run-getter for Royal Challengers Bengaluru with 438 runs.

They Might Go For A Bowling Capitan - Tom Moody

Tom Moody said that Royal Challengers Bengaluru might go for a bowling captain, who can bring balance to the side. He emphasized that a relatively dynamic player is needed to fit in at that top order if the captain is a batter.

"If I was Royal Challengers Bengaluru, I'd be looking in the market at captains and the options that they bring to the franchise. You obviously need a relatively dynamic player to fit in at that top order if the captain is a batter," Moody further stated.

"They might go for a bowling captain. Who knows? I think you'd just have a list of four or five elite captains that you feel will not only plug the captaincy but also fit the balance in the side," he concluded.

Faf du Plessis, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, and Will Jacks could be among the overseas retention options for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. It's still uncertain whether they will keep Du Plessis as captain or search for a new leader. Virat Kohli can be captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru again, but he is unlikely to take over the leadership job.
