The Indian Premier League (IPL) has pulled back from its earlier proposal of expanding the number of matches in the upcoming IPL 2025. There were talks about a 10-game increase to 84 matches in the IPL from the next season, but they decided to stick to the 74-game affair, like the 2023 and 2024 editions.
The IPL Governing Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have decided not to increase the number of matches in the next season, and the major reason behind the move is the workload of India's international cricketers, who already face a demanding schedule.
BCCI shelves 84-match plan for IPL 2025, prioritizing Indian players' workload
An ESPNCricinfo report claimed that the upcoming IPL 2025 will be a 74-game affair, and the reason behind the call is the workload of the Indian players, as they have a hectic schedule ahead, including 10 Tests, the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 final, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The idea for an expanded tournament was proposed when the media rights were sold two years ago, sparking excitement among fans and stakeholders as well. However, balancing the packed international calendar was challenging, especially as India’s top players juggle IPL commitments and national duties.
The BCCI found it tough to begin an 84-match IPL season next year. Following the standard schedule, the IPL 2025 is likely to conclude around May 25. With the WTC 2023-25 final set for June 11, and India anticipated to make the cut, the BCCI aims to send its players to London at least a week ahead of the event to guarantee thorough preparation for the high-stakes clash.
We have not taken a call on organizing 84 matches in IPL 2025: Jay Shah
The BCCI wants to ensure Indian players are in peak condition, not overburdened by an extended IPL season, as the board’s main aim is to manage their workload. By sticking to the tried-and-tested 74-match format, the BCCI wants to help the Indian players manage their workload.
The BCCI secretary Jay Shah was quoted as saying by The Economic Times: “We have not taken a call on organizing 84 matches in IPL 2025 since we also have to factor the load on the players due to the increase in matches. While it's (84 matches) part of the contract, it's up to the BCCI to decide whether to organize 74 or 84 matches.”
In a monumental deal two years ago, the IPL cemented its position as one of the world's premier sporting leagues, with its media rights being sold for an astonishing Rs 48,390.5 crores. The number of matches played each season directly influences the allocation of games in Package C.
Package C was the key part of the deal between BCCI and Disney STAR (TV rights) and Viacom18 (digital rights). This package, covering digital rights within India, includes a selection of high-profile fixtures such as the IPL playoffs and the final, with between 18 and 22 matches being featured each season.
