IPL 2025: Yuvraj Singh's Delhi Capitals move confirmed, role decided in Sourav Ganguly's presence

Former India allrounder Yuvraj Singh is set to start a new role in the Indian Premier League. According to the reports, Yuvraj has been confirmed as the new head coach of Delhi Capitals for the IPL 2025 season.

Yuvraj is set to join his former captain Sourav Ganguly in the franchise. Ganguly is currently the Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals. He has been in this role since the 2023 season before which he was the mentor of the team.

Ganguly was India's captain when Yuvraj Singh made his international debut. Yuvraj has often credited his own growth to Ganguly's continuous support.

Yuvraj Singh al but confirmed as the new head coach of Delhi Capitals

Yuvraj has been in talks with Delhi Capitals for the past few months. The former India allrounder has no prior coaching experience and it will be a big test of his coaching skills.

However, he has previously mentored youngsters like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. Both Gill and Abhishek are currently Indian internationals and the ones to look out for in the future.

Gill has even gone a step ahead and is already in India's leadership group. He is seen by many as the future captain of India and the next superstar batter from Indian cricket.

Yuvraj Singh replaces Ricky Ponting

Yuvraj Singh will replace Ricky Ponting in the Delhi Capitals. Ponting was sacked from the role of head coach a few months ago as the team management failed to get the desired results under him.

Ricky Ponting was the Capitals' head coach in seven IPL seasons in which the team reached the playoffs three times, in 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2020, Delhi reached the final for the first time but lost to Mumbai Indians in the summit clash.

Yuvraj Singh's numbers as a player

Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh was highly successful as a player. The left-hander from Punjab scored 8701 runs in 304 ODIs at an average of 36.55 and a strike rate of 87.67 with 14 hundreds and 52 fifties. He also picked up 111 wickets in ODIs at an average of 38.68.

Yuvraj also played 58 T20Is for India in which he scored 1177 runs at an average of 28.02 and a strike rate of 136.38 with 8 fifties. The 42-year-old also had a brief red-ball career in which he scored 1900 runs in 40 Tests at an average of 33.92 with three hundreds.

Besides scoring these runs, Yuvraj was also known as a player for big matches. His ability to enhance his game under immense pressure always stood out. He played key roles in India's T20 World Cup win in 2007 and ODI World Cup win in 2011.

In 2011, his heroics with both bat and ball earned him the Player of the Tournament award. In 2007, he became the first player in T20Is to hit 6 sixes in an over.

Yuvraj Singh will have a big job in hand to select the retained players for Delhi Capitals before the deadline. The deadline to submit the list of retained players for all the franchises is October 31.
