The IPL 2025 mega auction has created a buzz in the media with the presence of top T20 players across the world, including middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer. According to the latest reports, Delhi Capitals (DC) are to target Iyer as their top pick during the auction, following the release of Rishabh Pant.
The Delhi Capitals are a key franchise to watch in the IPL 2025 mega auction, which will take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah. DC will be looking for a new leader following the release of Rishabh Pant. They have retained Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Abishek Porel, and Tristan Stubbs for the IPL 2025 season.
Shreyas Iyer Released by Kolkata Knight Riders Ahead of Mega Auction
Shreyas Iyer has a strong connection with the Delhi-based franchise. He played for seven seasons with Delhi Capitals before moving to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022. Iyer then led KKR to the title in the IPL 2024 season. However, the Knight Riders did not retain Iyer for the upcoming IPL season.
Iyer began his IPL career with the Capitals, who supported him in his early years. Iyer led Delhi to the playoffs in 2019 and guided them to the final in 2020, where they were defeated by Mumbai Indians (MI). Overall, he has scored 3127 runs in 115 matches at an average of 32.24 with a strike rate of 127.48.
Delhi Capitals to Target Shreyas Iyer Mega Auction for Captaincy
According to a report by Khel Now, the Capitals are preparing to bid fiercely for Shreyas at the mega auction. It has been reported that the franchise is eager to bring Iyer back as captain. As per the report, the GMR Group, which co-owns Delhi Capitals, played a significant role in the decision to release Pant.
“Delhi Capitals’ co-owners the GMR Group, who are managing the team on a two-year rotational basis now, will bid aggressively for Shreyas Iyer at the mega auction due to their strong relationship with the player,” a source told Khel Now.
The Delhi Capitals are co-owned by the GMR Group and JSW Sports, with operations running on a two-year rotational basis. For the 2025-2026 cycle, GMR will handle the men's IPL team while JSW oversees the women's WPL team.
GMR has a strong relationship with Shreyas Iyer, having previously led him to the 2020 IPL final. Meanwhile, JSW favored Rishabh Pant as captain in 2021 and 2022. With GMR now back in control and Pant released, the franchise aims to bring Iyer back as captain for next year's T20 tournament.
