Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been relentlessly dominating the cricket fields since his IPL debut in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). In this ongoing season, too, the 15-year-old is phenomenal with the Rajasthan Royals (RR). If RR makes their way into the play-offs, there will be a fair amount of chance to see Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scoring some more runs on his way.
Cricket fans across the globe are well aware of the batting skills and six-hitting talent of the emerging Indian opener. But the cricket world is yet to witness him grinding hard on the ground, without the bat.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi plays mostly as an impact player for RR
As cricket is not only about batting, it is about bowling and fielding as well, fans are curious to see how Sooryavanshi will perform as a fielder. So far, Rajasthan Royals have only used the cricketer as their impact batter, not as a full-time cricketer in any match so far in the league. Using Vaibhav Sooryavanshi only as an impact player has attracted a lot of criticism.
Ahead of RR’s must-win game against the Mumbai Indians, Trevor Penny was asked about the team’s strategy behind utilizing Sooryavanshi only as a batter, and whether he is not good enough as a fielder.
Why does Sooryavanshi not come to the field?
The Rajasthan Royals assistant coach counters the criticisms by saying that the Bihar-born is a good fielder and is doing well in the training as well. Penny praised the batter’s running between the wickets as well.
Penny explains that the team management does not want to put extra pressure on the young cricketer, Sooryavanshi, who is in his own bubble, enjoys the time with the team, and works hard in the training.
“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is in his own bubble. He practises hard, enjoys himself, and we are doing everything to take care of the young boy. He is freakish. Vaibhav is a very good fielder. He is very good at running between the wickets. We are using him as an Impact Player because we want to keep him fresh for batting,” the assistant coach of the Rajasthan Royals said in Mumbai,” the Rajasthan Royals assistanc coach mentioned.
BCCI is in a hurry on Vaibhav?
It is believed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to offer the budding talent his senior cricket team debut cap soon. Recently, he was named in the India A team squad. If Vaibhav Sooryavanshi makes his senior cricket team debut at the age of only 15, will it be a wrong move? It was a bit of a tricky question for Penny, and he denied making any direct answer on it.
“Whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should be fast-tracked to international cricket or he needs a couple more seasons to gain more maturity, especially off the field, is a trick question, which I can't answer,” Trevor Penny added.
