MI rests Bumrah for the final game
The Mumbai Indians are playing their final group-stage match against the Rajasthan Royals without their pace spearhead. At the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya informed that they have rested the pacer.
Ahead of the match, Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians head coach, described the reasons behind the poor run of Jasprit Bumrah. Jayawardene informed that Bumrah had a fitness-related issue, which was carefully handled by the team management. According to the head coach, MI tried their best to manage Bumrah’s workload as much as possible.
MI head coach explains why the pacer sustained the setback
“(It is due to) a combination of a few things. Coming back from the (T20) World Cup, he had a slight niggle, which he played with through the World Cup, so we gave him adequate rest to come back. (In) the first 4-5 games, it was a gradual build-up for him to get over that niggle he had. You could see the pace was dropped because of that, and now he's back to his pace. The last 4-5 games have been good,” Mahela Jayawardene stated ahead of the MI vs RR match.
“(We have had) good conversations, and Bumrah is very experienced now. It was a collective conversation with his training staff, like where do we push him and how do we, there was workload management as well, how much he could bowl in nets in preparation. Initially, we tried to tactically also bowl him in situations so that he's not under pressure. But being the lead bowler, he was always under pressure, like bowling at the death,” he added.
As MI’s campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League comes to an end, the team management can now only hope for the best for the next season. A fit and fine Jasprit Bumrah is not only necessary for the Mumbai Indians but also for Team India.
