Jasprit Bumrah shatters record books; joins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in elite list

India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah has been sensational so far in the first Test between Australia and India at Perth. The fast bowler has been in breathtaking form in recent times and has continued his good form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well.
Bumrah completed a much-deserved five-wicket haul on Day 2 of the Test by picking up the wicket of Alex Carey. Interestingly, he picked up this wicket on his first ball of the day. With this wicket, he joined the veteran India spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in an elite list.

With Alex Carey's wicket, Jasprit Bumrah became the first Indian fast bowler and the third Indian bowler overall to pick up 50 wickets in a single edition of the World Test Championship (WTC).
Before him, only Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja had achieved this feat. Ashwin has surpassed the 50-wicket mark in all three editions of the WTC so far and Jadeja has reached 50 wickets once so far, in the current WTC 2023-2025 cycle.

Bumrah finished with a fine spell of 5-30 in the first innings of the Perth Test. His spell brought India back into the game after they were bowled out for 150 in the first innings. Bumrah produced a captain's performance and led from the front.
It was also his first five-wicket haul as a captain. In the current WTC cycle, Bumrah has picked up 50 wickets in 11 Tests at a staggering average of 15.48 with three five-wicket hauls.
Jasprit Bumrah is the highest wicket-taker of the year
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah also became the highest wicket-taker in 2024 after picking up the fifth wicket. He now has 61 wickets to his name in 18 matches and has surpassed Sri Lanka's legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who has picked up 60 wickets in 28 matches so far.

Excellent year for Jasprit Bumrah
Bumrah has had a fabulous year so far after missing the most part of 2023 with an injury. He played a key role in India's title win in the T20 World Cup 2024 with 15 wickets in 8 matches and was also adjudged the Player of the Tournament.
Bumrah has the most no. of wickets in Test cricket in 2024, having picked up 46 wickets in 10 Tests so far. Ashwin too has picked up 46 wickets and is joint highest alongside Bumrah.
The 30-year-old pacer is currently fourth on the list of highest wicket-takers in the WTC 2023-25 cycle with 50 wickets to his name. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravindra Jadeja are the only bowlers ahead of him. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have also picked up 50 wickets.
