The Indian cricket board has facilitated a farewell match for legendary pace bowler Jhulan Goswami. The third One-Day International against England at Lord’s “will be her last,” said a top BCCI official.

Jhulan, 39, was not chosen for the Indian team that competed in the recent Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. In March in New Zealand, she made her final appearance donning the national colours. She also did not get a place on the Indian team that faced Sri Lanka in July.

Goswami, 39, was dropped from the previous 50-over series in Sri Lanka in July but was chosen to India’s team for the three ODIs on Friday. Goswami reportedly had a conversation with the team management about looking to the future and developing a pool of talented fast bowlers who can play in different formats.

Goswami’s most recent appearance for India was in March of this year in New Zealand at the ODI World Cup. According to a board official, the BCCI wanted to give her a “proper farewell” because “Jhulan couldn’t say goodbye on the field” after suffering a side strain before India’s last group match against South Africa. Her last Test match was in October 2021, and she has not played in T20Is since 2018.

Jhulan Goswami debuted her international career at the age of 19 years old:

As per ESPNcricinfo, Goswami is leaving her options open for the inaugural women’s IPL, which is slated to begin in March 2023. She is also in talks with a men’s IPL team about a mentorship position, and for the upcoming domestic season, she will play for and serve as a mentor for the Bengal women’s squad.

In March 2002, when she was 19 years old, Goswami started her international career. Over the next 20 years, she played 12 Tests, 68 T20 international matches, and 201 ODIs. She has appeared in six 50-over World Cups and holds the record for most ODI wickets (252).
