Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi tried to run out Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Jitesh Sharma in IPL 2025. Former international umpire Anil Chaudhary spoke about the not-out decision given by the third umpire and stated that Jitesh Sharma should have been given out.

On the first ball of the 17th over in RCB’s innings, Digvesh Rathi had dismissed Jitesh Sharma, but the delivery was a backfoot no-ball. Jitesh smashed a six off the free hit. With 29 runs still needed from 19 balls, the LSG spinner tried to run the RCB stand-in skipper out before delivering the final ball of the over.

Jitesh Sharma Given Not Out After Digvesh Rathi's Run-Out Attempt at Non-Striker’s End

Digvesh Rathi stopped and removed the bails at the non-striker’s end, with Jitesh Sharma clearly outside his crease. The incident was referred to third umpire Ulhas Gandhe, who ruled Jitesh not out. Commentators on air mentioned that LSG captain Rishabh Pant withdrew the appeal.

The third umpire stated, “The bowler has passed his delivery stride in his popping crease,” before declaring it not out. However, the IPL Playing Conditions do not consider the bowler’s delivery stride as a factor. This raised questions about the correctness of the third umpire’s decision.

I Felt Jitesh Sharma Was Out - Former Umpire Anil Chaudhary

In a video shared by Star Sports, Anil Chaudhary said that Jitesh Sharma was out. Chaudhary added that Digvesh Rathi removed the bails before completing his delivery stride, and Jitesh should have been given out. However, he added that he respects the third umpire’s final decision.

"It is his (TV umpire Gandhe's) opinion, but I felt he (Jitesh) was out. It is a separate issue that Rishabh Pant withdrew the appeal, but according to the law, he (Rathi) removed the bails before reaching the release point, like you would have seen Ashwin do 2-3 years back. So I felt it was out, but we respect the opinion of the TV umpire."

What Do the Laws Say About Run-Outs at the Non-Striker’s End?

According to section 38.3.1 of the IPL 2025 Playing Conditions, “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out by the bowler attempting to run him/her out.

In these circumstances, the non-striker will be Run out if he/she is out of his/her ground when his/her wicket is broken by the bowler throwing the ball at the wicket or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered.”
