England batter Joe Root has finally reacted to David Warner's 'surfboard' jibe, and he promised exciting cricket on Australian soil in The Ashes 2025-26.

Joe Root has been the centre of attraction in Test cricket since 2021, as the batter has been in unstoppable form with some stunning performances.

However, Root's performance against Australia has been below his standards, as the English dynamic batter is yet to score a century against the country on their soil. He has 9 Test half-centuries but no hundreds to back himself.

Joe Root responds to David Warner's jibe

Former Australian cricketer David Warner had made an audacious remark about Joe Root. He said that the batter's performance in Australia is questionable, and Josh Hazlewood will pose as a huge threat to the veteran. Warner said that Root would need to “take the surfboard off his front leg” if he wanted to do well in Australia.

Hazlewood has dismissed Root a record number of times, only behind Pat Cummins and Jasprit Bumrah. Root, who recently commented on Warner's remark, claimed that they are nothing more than stunts to sensationalize the series.

"Just that. I can’t have any control on how people see the game or talk in interview. Nothing new, is it? You know there are going to be storylines and people wanting to hype up a big series. Doesn’t really change anything."

"The thing that stands out for me is I wanted it way too much the last couple of times. It took me away from what was important. Clearly the last few tours there have been loads of other things to contend with... a lot of distractions,” Root was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

Joe Root opens up on performance below his standards in Australia

The veteran, however, admitted to a not-so-convincing show in Australia as he has scored 892 runs at an average of nearly 36 in 14 Test matches. Root said he was way too focused and trying hard for runs rather than just enjoying the game.

"This time I just want to go and enjoy the tour for what it is. It’s a beautiful country, great place to go and play cricket. It’s going to be hostile, everything you’d expect and want from an away Ashes series."

Root highlighted his immense experience in the format and seemed relishing his recent new high as the second-highest run-getter in the red-ball format.

"That’s something you’ve got to relish. Going there with 150-odd Test matches under my belt, I feel couldn’t be more ready for it,” he added

Ben Stokes and England have not won a Test since 2011 on Australian soil

England will head to Australia in the hope of some exciting cricket as well as wins. They have a very poor record since winning a Test match back in 2011 on the Aussie soil.

The Ashes begins on 21st November, and a Ben Stokes-led England team, after a convincing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, would be hoping to secure a win in at least a few of the Tests if not the entire series.
