KKR Full Squad, Team List, Players List After IPL 2024 Auction

KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) released 12 players ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. They needed to fill up the most number of slots including the most number of overseas players as well (4). KKR, MI, and DC needed four overseas players. 

The Knight Riders had a remaining purse of 32.7 crores which was the second-highest after SRH’s 34 crores. KKR released a host of national and international players looking to revamp their squad in the IPL 2024 auction.

KKR finished seventh in IPL 2023 with six wins and 8 losses. They were led by Nitish Rana in the absence of Shreyas Iyer who was ruled out with shoulder injury. Iyer will return as the captain of the franchise in IPL 2023 with Rana set to be his deputy. This was confirmed by the Kolkata Knight Riders management recently. 

Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, their loyal warhorses were retained alongside Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, and Nitish Rana alongside skipper Shreyas Iyer. The Knight Riders’ management was very clear in reappointing Shreyas Iyer as their full-time skipper and Rana had no issues with that. He also said that he is happy to play as his deputy. KKR have a good core of Indian batters and they need a good core of Indian bowlers as well especially experienced seamers.

Among the players released were Shakib Al Hasan, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav, and Shardul Thakur. The release of Thakur and Umesh meant that the franchise needed specialist Indian seamers. They also needed overseas pace options heading into the auction. 

KKR reached the final of IPL 2021 but then failed to play with the same intensity in the next two seasons. This time around, the management has roped in Gautam Gambhir as the team mentor ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. 

The former KKR skipper was emotional about his return to the franchise he led from 2011-2017. He also won two titles for them in 2012 and 2014. Gambhir’s appointment was made keeping the long-term prospect of the team in mind.

He was an inspiring figure in the Lucknow Super Giants camp taking them to the knockouts in two back-to-back seasons. The KKR management is hoping for him to turn things around with the Knight Riders as well and help them win their first IPL title in a decade. 

KKR needed to strengthen their Indian pace attack and include some big overseas names in the auction with just four overseas slots remaining. They also needed a backup wicketkeeper for Gurbaz preferably an Indian who can chip in with the bat as well.
