Lanka Premier League Match-Fixing Attempt Investigated By Authorities

The Lanka Premier League has been spoiled by reports of match-fixing in its second season. The season ended on December 23 with Jaffna Kings winning the match. against Galle Gladiators. However, recently the sports ministry has started an investigation after an allegation filed for match-fixing. Jagath Fonseka, the head of the unit, said a leading national batter has complained he was approached for corruption.
“He told us that he had been approached by a rich gem businessman’s son and a friend of the same man to do so. We have concluded our and forwarded the papers for the Attorney General,” Fonseka told reporters.
The Prevention of Offences Relating to the Sports Act, made a law in 2019 was enforced to prevent the game from match-fixing attempts, corruption, illegal betting and other malpractices in the sport. A Special Inbestigatigation Unit was asked to be formed to track down such offences.
The Lanka Premier League was played between December 5-23 with five teams participating in the tournament. It included 24 matches with Galle and Jaffna playing the final of the 2021 season. The games were played at two venues namely, R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Colombo and Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Hambantota.

Thanks to the fans, they cheered for us, thanks everyone” said Jaffna skipper Thisara Perera after leading the team to the 2021 title.
