Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt has spoken about his team’s performance in the first Test against Australia in Perth. Australia are in a dominating position after the second day’s play. Pakistan after day two are 132/2 in response to Australia’s 487.

Pakistan pacers especially Shaheen Shah Afridi got smashed all around the park. Aamer Jamal picked up 6 wickets. However, Australia managed to post a mammoth first innings total on the board and Pakistan are well and truly behind in the match.

Pakistan have toured Australia 12 times so far and have not won a Test series in Australia. They have lost 14 consecutive Test matches since 1995. They were whitewashed 2-0, the last time they played in Australia in 2019.

Salman Butt said that Pakistan can learn from how India won against Australia on Australian soil in their last two tours. India won both the Test series by a 2-1 margin. Butt said that Pakistan can learn from how India played and won on Australian soil.

“I think the key was the hard length of the Indian bowlers and the ability of their batters to grind down the Australian bowlers and wear them down,” Butt said, as quoted by PTI.

“Once that happened the lower-order batters played aggressive cricket, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar if I recall correctly,” he further added.

Pakistan Need To Have Patience: Salman Butt

Seeing how the Pakistan bowlers struggled against the Aussie batters, Salman Butt said that the Pakistan pacers can learn from their Indian counterparts on how to bowl on Australian conditions.

“The key is patience in Australia, wear them down. This is not a very young pace attack and Indian batters made them bowl a lot of overs. Because of the even bounce of Australian pitches, it is not difficult to score runs but you have to be very patient,” said the former Pakistan skipper.

He concluded by backing Shan Masood’s appointment as the new Test captain of Pakistan.

“He is a level-headed and sensible guy who has really worked hard to improve his game. His captaincy stints in the PSL, plus in England for Yorkshire will help him a lot in easing into his new role in Australia” Butt concluded saying.
