LPL 2021: Kusal Perera, Angelo Mathews Miss Out From Drafts; Chris Gayle, Faf du Plessis To Feature As Overseas Stars

Former Sri Lanka captains Kusal Perera and Angelo Mathews will be the major cricketers missing from the Lanka Premier League 2021 as they missed out from being selected in the drafts for the upcoming season.

The LPL 2021 is scheduled to be played from December 4 to 23 in Colombo and Hambantota.

However, some of the prominent Sri Lankan names are omitted from the franchises. Kusal Perera, who was part of Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup squad and captained the country earlier in the year, was a late addition to the draft because of a “miscommunication between Sri Lanka Cricket and his club”, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

Mathews, who is not part of the national squad anymore, was Colombo’s icon player last year, and was available for selection but didn’t get picked. Senior allrounder Dhananjaya de Silva too, didn’t get a team, neither did Minod Bhanuka, Dinesh Chandimal, Akila Dananjaya, Praveen Jayawickrama, and Sadeera Samarawickrama. Each of these cricketers had played T20Is for Sri Lanka in the last few months.

However, the SLC has managed to rope in some big overseas names in Chris Gayle, Faf du Plessis, Tabraiz Shamsi, Imran Tahir, Najibullah Zadran, Taskin Ahmed, and Mohammad Hafeez.

The SLC and the LPL franchises have been in strife recently, which forced change of owners and the delaying of the tournament as well.

At least three of the five franchises that appeared in the first season have changed ownership, and only Galle Gladiators have retained their name. Even the owners of Jaffna Stallions, last season’s champions, were formally ousted by tournament organisers last month.
