The Madras High Court on Monday decided to hear on June 15 the contempt of court case filed by former Indian captain and ace cricketer MS Dhoni against Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer Sampath Kumar. MS Dhoni alleged that Sampath Kumar made disparaging remarks against the Supreme Court.
Justices M. Sundar and K. Govindarajan Thilakavadi told senior counsel P.R. Raman and advocate Perumbulavil Radhakrishnan that they hear contempt of court cases every Thursday and that the case will be heard on that day. Raman represents Dhoni and Radhakrishnan represents the IAS officer.

Dhoni pleaded with the court to punish Sampath Kumar for making comments against the judiciary in his written statement filed in response to the Rs 100 crore defamation suit. The CSK captain filed a case against an IPS officer in 2014 for including his name in an IPL betting scam.
R. Shanmugasundaram, the Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, had granted the cricketer permission for the former Indian cricketer to file a case petition under the Contempt of Courts Act after finding that the IPS officer’s words in the written statement amounted to scandalising court proceedings.

Earlier, MS Dhoni decided to charge Sampath Kumar with criminal contempt of court for making remarks against the judiciary in violation of an interim order passed in 2014.
“He has stated that the Supreme Court deviated its focus on the rule of law and shelved the deposition of the Justice Mudgal Committee (constituted to probe 2013 match-fixing allegations) and kept it in a sealed cover for reasons he failed to comprehend,” said Dhoni.
