A cricketer has been arrested for faking his age during a match related to the trial of the Maharashtra Cricket Association’s Under-19 team. According to a report in the Times of India, Baramati City police arrested Malegaon cricketer Amol Kolpe on Saturday in an underage-fudging case.

Amal Kolpe was sent to 14-day magisterial custody after the three-day police custody ended. Kolpe has an opportunity to file an application for regular bail after his arrest. He was found to have misrepresented his age during the MCA Under-19 Invitational League matches in January of this year.

Amal Kolpe provided documentation indicating his date of birth as September 28, 2007. However, an investigation found that his birthday was February 15, 1999, according to old records. The judge remanded him in police custody for three days. After the trial, the local court sentenced the accused to 14 days in jail.

Following a complaint by Nana Satav, a representative of the Karbhari Club, the police arrested Kolpe and three others on allegations of cheating and forgery. The three others, who are named in the FIR, have approached the Baramati Sessions Court for anticipatory bail, which is expected to be heard on Thursday.

“We had verified the documents submitted by the complainant. Post-verification, we questioned the Malegaon (Nashik district) boy on the issue of hiding his real age and later arrested him,” Inspector Sunil Mahadik of the Baramati City police told TOI.

“We will collect all the documents related to Kolpe’s real date of birth and what the boy has submitted for the tournament he played in Baramati earlier this year. We will also explore the role of other persons in the case,” he concluded.

Complainant Satav, who had previously served as GST commissioner, said that not properly addressing the issue of overage will affect the careers of young players who follow the regulations.

“I approached the police because of the incompetent handling of the case by the (tournament) authorities concerned. Not addressing the overage issue properly is nothing but playing with the careers of those young players who follow the regulations,” Satav told TOI.
