Making Rohit Sharma The Vice-captain Was Selectors' Decision And I Completely Respect That – Ajinkya Rahane

Senior Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane has opened up on the decision of the selectors to remove him from Test vice-captaincy and appoint Rohit Sharma as the new vice-captain of the team in the purest format of the game.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee sacked Virat Kohli as ODI skipper and Ajinkya Rahane as Test vice-captain ahead of the India tour of South Africa 2021-22 and Rohit was given both roles in the team.

Meanwhile, during a chat with the Times of India, Rahane was asked if the selectors had a discussion with him on the vice-captaincy matter. Rahane said that the selection committee took the decision to appoint Rohit as Test vice-captain and he completely respects the selectors’ decision. He added that Rohit is his good friend and he has done a lot of hard work to get that role in the longest format of the game.

“That was entirely the selectors’ decision (making Rohit the vice-captain). Nothing was in my control. I respect that decision. Rohit is doing really well and he is leading the team really well. I was happy for Rohit. He played a lot of cricket to get there. We are good friends too. I am really happy for Rohit,” stated Rahane.

“I don’t think about something that is not in my control. It was the selectors’ call. Selectors made me the vice-captain and they made me the captain too. Making Rohit the vice-captain was their decision and I completely respect that,” said Rahane.

Rahane said that he doesn’t like expressing himself a lot because he respects the environment of the team. He added that his performance for the team is the most important thing for him.

“I don’t express too much. I respect the team environment. But again, that doesn’t mean one should take things for granted. For me, the most important thing is performance, how can I give my best for the team, how can I respect the team’s environment. Those are the things I always value,” said senior batsman.
