Marcus Harris, Matthew Renshaw Or Cameron Bancroft? Ricky Ponting Predicts David Warner’s Successor As Test Opener

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has predicted who will replace David Warner as Australia’s opener in Tests. There are three title contenders for the same- Marcus Harris, Matthew Renshaw, and Cameron Bancroft. All three of them showed good performance in domestic cricket in the last seasons.

David Warner has mentioned that he will retire after the ongoing Test series against Pakistan. After his ouster, Australia will need a powerful opener to replace him in Tests. Currently, David Warner and Usman Khawaja are the pair of openers for Aussies in Tests.

Cameron Bancroft Will Succeed David Warner As Test Opener, Feels Ricky Ponting

While speaking to Australian radio station SEN, Ricky Ponting made his prediction for David Warner’s successor as Test opener for Australia. According to Ponting, Cameron Bancroft will replace Warner in Tests as opener.

“If you look at those three guys, I think it’s quite clear that Bancroft is the one that’s got the runs on the board and I wouldn’t be surprised if they (selectors) go that way. If you wind the clock back about six months it might have been a slightly different order than what it is now”.

“I think they probably had Harris as the one that would come back in a while ago. To me now it sort of feels (there is) a bit more of a groundswell behind Cameron Bancroft getting first crack,” Ricky Ponting said.

Ricky Ponting also feels that Mitchell Marsh will be the first-choice all-rounder for selectors currently and Cameron Green will have to wait for his next opportunity.

“I think Cameron Green might just have to sit back and bide his time and wait for the opportunity to come back. He can get a truckload of runs in Shield cricket and sort of force his way back into the side. Labuschagne has been outstanding at No.3 for Australia, it’s very much a specialist position,” Ricky Ponting further added.

Australia is set to face Pakistan in a three-match Test series. The Australia vs Pakistan Test series will be played from December 14 onwards. Australia is yet to announce their squad for the series.
