Former Australian cricketer Mark Taylor lashed out at former and current England players following the spirit of the game debate over Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in the second Test of the Ashes at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. He said that if someone is going to wander around the crease he can be stumped.

Jonny Bairstow’s run out on the Day 5 of the Lord’s Test ignited the spirit of the cricket debate. Alex Carey showed great presence of mind after the England batter ducked under the short ball from Cameron Green. As the batter left the crease immediately after the ball, the keeper batter from behind effected a direct hit and the batter was given out.

Mark Taylor too didn’t shy away from lashing out at the England team, reminding them that there are 10 ways to get out in Test cricket and one such was Jonny Bairstow’s. He said that he has no issues with what Pat Cummins and the company did. Writing in his column for Sydney Morning, he said:

“The batsmen have to remember there are 10 ways to get out in Test cricket. One of them is by being stumped, and it doesn’t say in the laws it has to be off a slow bowler. If you’re going to wander out of your crease doing whatever you want to do, be mindful that you can be stumped,”

“So, your job as a batsman is to get back in your crease until the ball is dead. I’ve got no issue at all with what Pat Cummins and the Australian team did during the last day of the Lord’s Test when they stumped Jonny Bairstow.”

Mark Taylor further pointed out that Jonny Bairstow tried to effect similar dismissal in the Edgbaston Test and also recalled when Brendon McCullum similarly dismissed Paul Collingwood in 2009. He explained:

“It’s a legitimate form of dismissal and has been as long as I’ve known the game of cricket. I’ve seen many wicketkeepers throwing the ball towards the stumps to try and claim an unsuspecting batsman’s wicket.”

“Jonny Bairstow found himself on the receiving end of a controversial stumping, but two days earlier tried to pull one off himself — the incident drawing parallels with England head coach Brendon McCullum when he stumped Paul Collingwood.”

Australia currently leadsthe series by a margin of 2-0. The third Test match will be played on Thursday (6th July).
