Former Bengal cricketer Shreevats Goswami made allegations of match-fixing in the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) first division league. Shreevats Goswami shared two video clips of a match between Mohammedan Sporting and Town Club on his social media handle.
Shreevats Goswami represented the Bengal team in 31 first-class and 97 List-A matches, scoring 3019 and 3371 runs, respectively. He represented Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL.
Goswami managed to score just 293 runs in 31 IPL matches at a disappointing average of 14.65. The wicketkeeper-batter was also part of India’s U19 World Cup-winning squad in 2008. He announced his retirement from first-class cricket in October of last year.
I Am Ashamed To See This – Shreevats Goswami
Shreevats Goswami shared a video on Facebook showcasing footage from a match between Mohammedan Sporting and Town Club. Goswami alleged that Mohammedan Sporting batters deliberately threw away their wickets during the match.
Goswami emphasized the significance of club cricket in Bengal, urging against tarnishing its integrity. He questioned the absence of media coverage and lamented witnessing such behavior in the game.
“This is a Super Division match in Kolkata Club Cricket, two big teams doing this, any idea what’s going on here? I am ashamed to see this having played the game that is so close to my heart. I love cricket and I love playing in Bengal but looking at this breaks my heart. Club cricket is the heart and soul of Bengal cricket please don’t ruin it. I think this is called ‘got up’ cricket. Where is the media now?” Goswami posted.
In the first video shared by Goswami, a right-handed batsman is observed leaving the ball aimed directly at his stumps before walking off the field. The second footage shows a left-handed batsman stepping out of the crease for a wide delivery, resulting in a stumping.
The controversy has overshadowed Kolkata’s club cricket, an integral aspect of the city’s sporting heritage. Goswami’s allegations raise doubts about the integrity of players and officials. The outcome of CAB’s investigations and subsequent actions will play a vital role in reaffirming the principles of fairness and competitiveness in Bengal cricket.
We Have Called A Tournament Committee – Snehasish Ganguly
CAB President Snehasish Ganguly promptly addressed Goswami’s allegations by confirming that the association has scheduled a tournament committee meeting on March 2 to discuss the issue further.
“We have called a tournament committee meeting on March 2 to take up the matter,” Ganguly said.
The three-day match concluded at the 22 Yards Academy in Salt Lake, with Town Club earning seven points on Wednesday. Shakib Habib Gandhi’s impressive 223 guided Town Club to a total of 446 runs. Despite a strong start led by Joyjit Basu’s century, Mohammedan Sporting faltered after his dismissal, ending their innings at 281/9.
