Former England captain Michael Vaughan criticized Mohammad Kaif for his recent comments about Australia following the final of the ICC World Cup 2023. Mohammad Kaif refused to acknowledge Australia as world champions despite winning the summit clash.
Kaif congratulated Australia but refused to accept that the best team won the ICC World Cup 2023. He insisted that the Indian team had been the superior side and could win against Australia. He attributed India’s loss in the final game to one of those bad days in cricket.
“Congratulations to Australia, but I am not ready to accept that the best team won the World Cup. This Indian team has been the best side. They would win so many times playing against the same Australian team, even though they lost today. It was one of those bad day, this happens sometimes,” Mohammad Kaif said as quoted on Star Sports after the final.
India remained undefeated in the group stage and secured a 70-run victory against New Zealand in the semi-final. The Men in Blue faced a six-wicket defeat against the Australian team in the final, despite their dominance throughout the prestigious tournament at home.
Brilliant Side On A4 Paper – Michael Vaughan
Michael Vaughan expressed his disagreement with Mohammad Kaif’s statement, taking a sarcastic tone on X (formerly known as Twitter). Vaughan suggested that if teams were to be judged based on paper, England would be considered the world champions.
“Maybe England are World champs then .. Brilliant side on A4 paper,” Vaughan wrote.

England, the defending champions, had a lackluster performance in the World Cup, winning only three out of nine games. They struggled for most of the tournament and remained at the bottom before victories against the Netherlands and Pakistan in the league stage.
England retained only six players from their 2023 World Cup squad for the upcoming West Indies white-ball series. The Jos Buttler-led team will play three ODIs and five T20Is during the series, which is set to commence with a 50-over match in Antigua on December 3.
