Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has shared his insights into the Impact Player rule, which has sparked debate among the cricketers and experts in the ongoing IPL 2024. Rohit Sharma was already not in favour of the rule

He urged the bowlers to stop ‘crying’ about the impact player rule in the IPL.

The Impact Player rule has received heavy criticism from players like Mohammed Siraj of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who argues that this rule complicates the game for bowlers and all-rounders in the IPL. Notably, this rule is not part of the international cricket norms.

Reacting to the ongoing debate, Varun Chakravarthy offered his perspective, highlighting the need to accept the unique nature of the IPL. His comments came after he helped the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat the Delhi Capitals (DC) by 7 wickets in Match No. 47 of the ongoing IPL 2024 on April 29.

How much ever the bowlers cry for the Impact Player rule: Varun Chakravarthy

Chakravarthy highlighted the evolution of teams' strategies for utilizing the Impact Player rule more effectively this season. The spinner said that the teams are adopting the aggressive approach from the start, so bowlers will have to embrace the challenge rather than cry for its impact on their game.

Varun Chakravarthy said at the post-match press conference after KKR vs DC match: “Somewhere we have to accept that this IPL is different and we have to move on. The Impact Player was there last season, main thing is teams have used it better this season. They want to charge from first, how much ever the bowlers cry, you have to take up the challenge.”

Meanwhile, Chakravarthy was a hero with the ball for KKR, as he finished with stunning figures of 3/16 in his quota of 4 overs to help the hosts restrict Delhi Capitals (DC) to 153/9 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He felt DC’s decision to bat first cost them the IPL 2024 game against KKR on Monday.

Speaking about the pitch, the Player of the Match spinner noted: “Wickets have become very placid in the second innings. Definitely, it was good to bowl in the first innings the pitch was also little helpful. This pitch was a little more turning, in other matches it was not helping this much.”

Varun Chakravarthy opens up about the challenging conditions at Eden Gardens and SRK's lovely gesture

Furthermore, Chakravarthy pointed out that the challenging conditions for bowling in Kolkata were only because of the high humidity, which made it hard to maintain a grip on the ball. The KKR spinner also revealed that the current humidity levels have led to sweaty fingers, which was not seen in the last couple of years.

Despite these conditions, Varun avoided using them as an excuse for any difficulties he faced during the match. At the end, the mystery spinner also revealed the KKR co-owner and Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan's heartwarming gesture after he leaked 46 runs in his 3 overs during KKR’s 8-wicket loss to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their previous IPL 2024 game in Kolkata.

Chakravarthy signed off by saying, “The last match was a very hard pill to swallow. We had conversations with the management, the bowling coach. SRK came to me yesterday and spoke to me personally, he said 'whatever is happening in the IPL, do not take it personally, don't self-doubt yourself'.
