Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody opened up about Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma’s batting approach in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He said that the opening batter hasn’t quite gotten out of the blocks and is trying to boss every situation.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma hasn’t quite looked himself in the IPL 2023. In the seven games he has played so far, he has tried to take bowlers to the cleaners irrespective of the conditions and has given his wicket his most of the games.

Rohit Sharma has managed just one fifty this season so far and played a knock of 43 runs against PBKS. Apart from these two knocks he has gotten out for low scores while trying to take the attack to the bowlers.

He tried to do the same in the MI’s recent game against GT as he struggled against swinging ball and ended up with the knock of just 2 runs in 8 balls. In the seven games so far, Rohit Sharma has scored 181 runs from an average of 25.88.

Tom Moody said that Rohit Sharma has teased his fans with the two good knocks but hasn’t quite fired. But he lauded him for showing intent.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said: “At the moment, it is nearly like he [Rohit Sharma] has teased this with a couple of performances where you think, ‘Okay, here it comes’, and you are waiting for those floodgates to open. But that’s all we have seen.

“We have just seen a couple of little teases. He hasn’t really got out of the blocks. He is showing the intent, which has been important. That’s been the one thing this year is that he’s come out trying to boss it and control it from up front.”

MI vs RR: “When there is movement in the air or off the seam, both those players look vulnerable” says Tom Moody

Tom Moody further pointed out that both MI openers, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan have looked vulnerable when the balls move. Notably, Kishan has scored 183 runs to his name from seven outings at an average of 26.14.

“When there is movement in the air or off the seam, both those players look vulnerable. I think you can say that across the whole of world cricket. The game has changed quite a lot and I think T20 has had something to do with that with regards to technique and the way the batters play.

“As soon as we see swing or seam, we see even the best batters struggle. It’s because in a T20 game, you have to have your hands in a different position and need to be set in a different position to seek power.”

Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan will be next seen in action when Mumbai Indians will take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their next game on Sunday (30th April).
