Michael Vaughan made the hard pick between MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli when he was asked to choose the better India captain during an interaction with a cricket website. Vaughan has seen both the players from close quarters and has even played against MS Dhoni when he was starting out for India.

I Think He’s The Trailblazer: Michael Vaughan On The Better India Captain Between MS Dhoni And Virat Kohli

MS Dhoni is by far the most successful captains not only for India but also in the world. It was under his captaincy India won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the 50-over World Cup in 2011, and the 2013 Champions Trophy and also reached the top of the ICC Test rankings for the first time.

Virat Kohli was his protégé from the start and was groomed by the Jharkhand man to take over from him when the time came. While Virat Kohli has not been able to win an ICC trophy, he has kept India the no.1 ranked Test team for five years running, apart from earning India their maiden Test series win in Australia in 2018-19 and Test series wins in West Indies, Sri Lanka and Test win in South Africa and England.

The former England captain was asked to name the better captain between the two and Vaughan did not hesitate and named MS Dhoni as his pick.

“MS… MS, I think he’s the trailblazer, particularly in the white-ball and T20 game. He’s the best over T20 captain by a good distance. I think what he brought to the Indian team was fantastic,” Vaughan told CricTracker.

MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2019 after India lost in the semi-final of that year’s World Cup. He had already called time on his Test career in the 2014-15 tour of Australia. Virat Kohli has proven to be India’s best Test captain of all time, leading the team to 36 wins from 60 matches.
