Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has opened up on his retirement after getting fit from his injury that kept him out of the field for months. Mohammed Shami said that he will play even till 2034 if his body allows it.
He also added that he never thinks about retirement and always tries to beat the opposition when he is on the ground. Mohammed Shami is a crucial Indian pacer who has been part of the Indian team for the last few years.
The right-arm pacer is a permanent member in all three formats with Jasprit Bumrah and is always picked into the squad whenever he is available. Like Jasprit Bumrah, Shami has made a name and permanent place for himself in the national team.
He was the top wicket-taker for the Indian Team during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and picked 5-wicket hauls in multiple games.
Notably, Shami picked 7 wickets in the close-fought semi-final against New Zealand and helped India to win the match and reach the final in the ODI World Cup. Later due to an injury, he could not participate in IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup 2024.

I have nothing to do with anyone's opinions on my retirement: Mohammed Shami
While speaking in a YouTube video with journalist Shubhankar Mishra, Mohammed Shami has revealed his retirement plans. The right-arm pacer said he never listens to people who talk about his retirement rumors. He also thanked god for giving him so much in life.
"I have already told you this. Many people have put a question mark on my retirement. I have nothing to do with anyone's opinions. I never talk to them, nor do I listen to them. I can respond to them but never listen to them. God has given me so much and I respect that and thank him", the right-arm pacer said.
Shami, who won the purple cap in IPL 2023, also added that he will leave cricket when he feels he is bored of the game. He also added he will play until he has the self-confidence to do so and can continue to play till 2034 too.
“Talking about my retirement, the day I feel I am bored of cricket, I will say goodbye to the game. Doesn't matter if it is T20Is, ODIs, or Tests, when I am at the ground I want to beat everyone”, the Indian pacer said.
“I have that much self-confidence. I don't care about my age. Doesn't matter it is 2026, 2028, 2030, or 2034, when I am on the ground, I will perform. However, I will be on the ground only when I am confident to perform”, Mohammed Shami further added.
I will be back until I can play: Shami
Towards the end, Shami reckoned that he would be back in 2026, 2027, and 2028 too if he could take up the responsibility of a pacer in the team properly.
“I will be back, it does not matter if it is 2026, 2027, or 2028. I will not leave playing until I feel I am wasting the place of a pacer in the team, or not being able to take up responsibilities”, he concluded.
Notably, the Indian Team has a new coach Gautam Gambhir who will lead the side for the next four years. The Men-in-Blue are set to participate in a few crucial ICC tournaments like ICC World Test Championship Final 2025, ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
India will also play in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. Recently, they won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with skipper Rohit Sharma. It looks like Shami will be part of all these events as he is at his peak currently.
