Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami will be back in the whites during their upcoming tour of England, where they will play six Tests. India leave for the United Kingdom on the 2nd of June to participate in the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, followed by a five-match Test series against England. Mohammed Shami believes that if they can replicate their form of the last six months, they should have a great summer.
The Indian team climbed to the top of the Test rankings by beating England and Australia in the last few months. Virat Kohli’s men sealed their spot in the ICC World Test Championship by dominating England at home. But they have not won a Test series in England since 2007 and the upcoming tour seems to be their best chance. Shami took 16 wickets in five Tests in India’s visit to England in 2018.
Mohammed Shami sees it pointless to prepare well in advance since the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is the best example of how things could change quickly. Hence, the 30-year old prefers to take it one series or tournament at a time and conceded that their confidence level is high ahead of their departure to England. Shami believes if India could replicate their form of the last six months, they should have a great time in the UK.
“See, there is no point in planning too much as certain things are not in our control. Who would have thought that the pandemic would virtually destroy two years of our lives – hence I prefer to take it by each series or tournament as the case may be. We have played some extraordinary cricket in recent times as an unit and naturally, the confidence level is high on the eve of our departure for England. If we can reproduce some of the form which we did over last six months, I am confident it will be a great summer for us,” Shami told Gulf News.
I found my rhythm back in the IPL: Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami, who will play his first Test since the one in Adelaide last year, wants to mentor the youngsters before retirement instead of going on to play forever. Furthermore, the Bengal speedster does not wish to over-think about his bowling and reveals rediscovering his rhythm in IPL 2021.
“It comes automatically as after being in international cricket for so many years, I would like to share any input that the youngsters may want. I am not going to play forever, so it will be great if I can pass on something to the youngsters. I do not believe in over-thinking about what my approach will be. I found my rhythm back in the IPL and the rest, of course, depends on the conditions,” the right-arm seamer added.
