Team India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj bamboozled South Africa all-rounder Marco Jansen with a stunning delivery on Day 1 (Friday, November 14) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Siraj, who struggled with his line and lengths in the first session, picked up two wickets for the Men in Blue in the post-lunch session.

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma opted to bat after winning the toss. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton added a 57-run stand for the first wicket inside the first 10 overs. India finally broke through in the 11th over when pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah produced a superb delivery to bowl Rickelton for 23 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah then removed Aiden Markram, who scored 31 runs off 48 balls. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav picked up his first wicket of the match by dismissing Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma. By lunch, the visitors were in a difficult position at 105 for the loss of 3 wickets.

India tightened their grip early in the second session. The home team reduced South Africa to 120 for 5, with Bumrah trapping Tony de Zorzi lbw for 24 before Kuldeep removed Wiaan Mulder.

Mulder, who recently scored a triple-century against Zimbabwe, has struggled in recent Tests, recording his third consecutive low score since the Pakistan series. The visitors lost half their side with just 120 runs on the board.

Mohammed Siraj produced a brilliant spell during the second session. In the 45th over of the Proteas’ first innings, the pacer picked up two wickets.

Mohammed Siraj first trapped wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne lbw for 16 with a delivery that seamed back sharply into the pads. The on-field umpire gave it out, and Verreynne opted for a review. Ball-tracking showed it would have crashed into the middle stump.

A few balls later, Mohammed Siraj bowled Marco Jansen for a duck. He delivered a ball that went through the gap between bat and pad to hit the stumps. The double strike swung the momentum firmly in India’s favor as South Africa struggled to rebuild.

Jansen had escaped just before his dismissal. The lower-order batter stayed back to defend, and the ball rolled past the pole before he kicked it away.

South Africa Lose Eight Wickets for 154 Runs Before Tea

By the end of the second session on Day 1, South Africa were 154 for 8, with Tristan Stubbs at the crease. The reigning World Test Champions last won a Test on Indian soil in 2010 and are coming off a 1-1 series draw in Pakistan.

India, meanwhile, secured a 2-0 home sweep over the West Indies. Under Shubman Gill’s leadership, the hosts are favourites to extend their dominance over the Proteas. The Men in Blue recorded back-to-back 3-0 home series victories over South Africa in 2015/16 and 2019/20.

South Africa A managed to surprise India A by chasing 417 in a recent warm-up fixture. The Proteas have not won a Test series in India since their landmark triumph in 1999/2000, a record India will look to maintain in this two-match contest.
