Indian captain Virat Kohli hinted that the team management might continue with the four pacers and one spinner combination in the upcoming game, although he asserted that it is subjected to the conditions they encounter.

With conditions in Nottingham overcast, the Virat Kohli-led management decided to play just one spinner in the form of Ravindra Jadeja while dropping ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur.

The exclusion of Ashwin was understandably met with a lot of criticism but both Jadeja and Shardul Thakur justified their selections.

While Jadeja smashed a crucial half-century in the first innings to help India take a lead, Shardul Thakur performed the role of a fourth seamer admirably as he chipped in with crucial wickets of Joe Root, Ollie Robinson, Dan Lawrence, and Jos Buttler across two innings.

Kohli was asked if the team will persist with the 4-1 combination in the post-match presentation and while he admitted that this is the template that the visitors are likely to go with in the forthcoming Tests, he also said that the team will adapt as per the conditions on offer.

“Most likely it will be a template going ahead [4-1 combination], but we’ve always been adaptable as well, to the conditions and pace of the wicket. It’s going to be an exciting series to be a part of, as India-England always is.” signed off  Kohli.

With the first Test in Nottingham ending in a rain-affected draw, both sides will now head to London where they will lock horns at Lord’s Cricket Ground from August 12 in a bid to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
