IPL 2009 was the second edition of the Indian Premier League. The tournament witnessed participation by 8 teams. Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kolkata Knight Riders were part of the edition. Rajasthan Royals were the defending champions of the season.

Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers, and Deccan Chargers qualified for playoffs in IPL 2009 after finishing as the top four teams in the points table. Deccan Chargers defeated Delhi Daredevils in semi-final 1 and entered the final. Royal Challengers Bangalore became the 2nd finalist after defeating Chennai Super Kings in semi-final 2. Deccan Chargers won the title after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final by 6 runs. A total of 59 matches were played in IPL 2009 and 16,141 runs were scored in the season. Rajasthan Royals scored the least runs in IPL 2009 with 1688 runs. Shane Warne was the skipper of the team. The team finished on the 6th spot in the points table and did not qualify for playoffs. Out of 14 matches in the season, RR won 6 and lost 7. One match ended with no result. Ravindra Jadeja was the team’s highest run-scorer with 295 runs in 13 innings.

7. Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders scored 1757 runs in the season. Brendon McCullum led the captain of the team in the tournament. KKR finished on the last 8th spot in the tournament, after losing 10 matches out of 14 and winning just 3. One match ended with no result. Brad Hodge was the highest run-getter for the team with 365 runs in 12 innings.

6. Mumbai Indians

In IPL 2009, Mumbai Indians accounted for 1897 runs. The team was led by Sachin Tendulkar. The franchise finished on the 7th spot in the points table after the group stage. Out of 14 matches, the team won 5 games and lost 8. One match of the team ended with no result. JP Duminy scored 372 runs in 12 innings and was the highest run-getter for the team.

5. Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab piled up 1928 runs in the 2nd edition of IPL. They were led by Yuvraj Singh. The team did not qualify for playoffs after finishing on the 5th spot in the points table after the group stage. They won 7 matches and lost 7 out of 14. Yuvraj Singh emerged as the highest run-scorer of the team with 340 runs in 14 matches.

Delhi Daredevils smashed 2131 runs in the season. Virender Sehwag led the franchise in the season. The team topped the points table after the group stage. However, they lost to Deccan Chargers in semi-final 1 and lost a place in the final. Delhi Daredevils played 15 matches in the season, out of which they won 10 and lost 5. AB de Villiers scored the most runs for the team with 465 runs in 15 matches.

Chennai Super Kings accounted for 2231 runs in the season, emerging as the 3rd highest run-scoring team. The team was led by MS Dhoni. CSK finished on the 2nd spot in the points table after the group stage. They lost in the semi-finals to Royal Challengers Bangalore. Out of 15 games in the season, the MS Dhoni and co. won 8 matches and lost 6. One match ended with no result. Matthew Hayden was the highest run-scorer of the team as well as the tournament with 572 runs in 12 matches. Suresh Raina was the 2nd highest run-scorer for the team and 4th highest overall with 434 runs in 14 matches.

2. Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore scored 2280 runs in the season. They were the 2nd highest run-scorer in the tournament. Anil Kumble led the franchise in the season. RCB defeated Chennai Super Kings in the semi-final 2 and entered the final. However, they lost to Deccan Chargers in the final and ended as runners-up. The team played 16 matches in the season, out of which they won 9 and lost 7. Jacques Kallis was the top run-scorer for the team with 361 runs in 15 matches.

Deccan Chargers scored 2408 runs in the season and were the top run-scorer in the tournament. Adam Gilchrist was the captain of the team in the tournament. Deccan Chargers finished on the 4th spot in the points table and qualified for playoffs. In a semi-final 1 match, they defeated Delhi Daredevils. Later, they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 6 runs to lift the title. Out of 16 matches, the Adam Gilchrist-led side won 9 games and lost 7. Adam Gilchrist is the highest run-scorer of the team and 2nd highest overall with 495 runs in 16 matches.
