Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) disappointed one and all, especially with the way they were playing, as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ended their 10-year trophy drought by winning the IPL 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, May 26.

In the one-sided IPL 2024 final, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat first, and his team left no stone unturned to disappoint him, losing three wickets for just 21 runs inside the powerplay against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Chennai.

Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 91-run partnership guided KKR to IPL 2024 Final triumph

Mitchell Starc has once again proved lethal with the new ball, and then Harshit Rana caught the dangerous fish to drag SRH out of the game in the IPL 2024 Final, as the Orange Army were bowled out for a paltry 113 runs in 18.3 overs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

KKR had already won the half-battle, and then Rahmanullah Gurbaz (39 runs off 32 balls) and Venkatesh Iyer (52* off 26 balls) helped KKR chase down the paltry total inside 11 overs to script history by winning the IPL trophy after almost a decade.

With this thrilling win, the Kolkata-based franchise won its third IPL title, having clinched trophy in 2012 and 2014. Well, the IPL 2024 Final has a rare coincidence with the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 Final between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC) earlier this year.

SRH and DC lose in the Finals led by Australian captains

KKR's dominant win over SRH in the IPL 2024 Final has created a lot of buzz on social media for its striking resemblance to the WPL 2024 Final between RCB and DC. In the IPL 2024 Final, the Indian star Shreyas Iyer-led KKR team secured an easy win against Pat Cummins' SRH, dismissing the Orange Army for the lowest-ever IPL final total of 113 runs in just 18.3 overs.

Similarly, in the WPL 2024 Final on March 17, India Women star Smriti Mandhana-led RCB bowled out Meg Lanning's DC team for the same score of 113 runs in the same number of overs. This coincidence has generated significant buzz among the fans globally, especially since both losing teams, SRH and DC, were led by the captains of the Australian women's and senior men's national teams, respectively. However, Lanning retired from international cricket in April, after the WPL.

Additionally, both Cummins and Lanning entered their respective tournaments, the IPL and WPL 2024, after leading Australia to historic wins over India in the major ICC finals. Cummins led the Australia cricket team to the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) Final and the 2023 ODI World Cup Final triumph against India.

On the other hand, Lanning led the Australian women's cricket team to a big win in the 2022 T20 Women's World Cup Final, also against India Women. Notably, KKR’s spin all-rounder Sunil Narine emerged as the Most Valuable Player of the IPL 2024, where he amassed 488 runs and 17 wickets and played a key role in the team’s title triumph.
