Team India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Shardul Thakur recently picked the better captain between legendary MS Dhoni and Men in Blue skipper Rohit Sharma. Shardul Thakur made a cheeky remark on Rohit Sharma while picking the better captain, adding that the Indian skipper is his friend.

MS Dhoni is regarded as India's most successful captain in white-ball cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter led the national team to triumphs in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy. Dhoni secured five titles for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Rohit Sharma also won five titles as skipper of the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League. The veteran opening batter guided the team to the title in the T20 World Cup 2024, adding a feather to his cap. He became the third Indian captain, after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, to win an ICC World Cup trophy.

MS Dhoni vs Rohit Sharma! Shardul Thakur Picks Better Captain

Shardul Thakur, who has played under both MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, was asked to choose between the two captains. He picked Dhoni and added that Rohit would understand. Shardul said that he would butter Rohit if he felt upset.

“Rohit is my friend first, so I would say MSD. He (Rohit) will understand even if he feels angry, I would go and butter him and say, Rohit, no problem! When this video goes to him, he will be like typical Rohit Sharma with me on the phone,” said Shardul Thakur during an event at IISM.

Both MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma do not have captaincy roles for their respective teams in the IPL. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20Is following his T20 World Cup 2024 victory. However, he will continue as captain in Tests and ODIs. Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja also retired from T20I cricket.

MS Dhoni To Play For Chennai Super Kings In IPL 2025?

MS Dhoni has not yet confirmed his participation in IPL 2025. He guided Chennai Super Kings to their fifth IPL title in 2023. The former Indian skipper stepped down from captaincy before the IPL 2024 and handed it over to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Dhoni played all matches as a player in this year's T20 tournament.

Dhoni showed glimpses of his old form with impactful cameos down the order and scored at a staggering strike rate of 220.55. However, the Chennai-based team failed to make the playoffs in its first season under Ruturaj Gaikwad. The 43-year-old cricketer struggled with a bad knee injury during the season.

It's uncertain whether Dhoni will play in IPL 2025. He recently said that he will decide his future after reviewing the rules for the upcoming mega auction and retention policies. Reports suggest that the Chennai Super Kings have requested to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player, similar to a rule that was valid till 2021.
