Former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad defended Team India’s obsession with preparing rank-turners despite having quality spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

He stressed that India is no longer a spin-friendly country, and they will soon sort out quality spinners, as Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja can be their last spin masters. The Indian cricket team has already proven their mettle on good batting decks in Australia and England.

We are no more a spin-friendly country: MSK Prasad

But MSK Prasad asserted that the prevailing myth of the team’s dominance in spin-friendly conditions is outdated, noting how teams tailor their pitches to suit their strengths.

MSK Prasad told Boria Majumdar on RevSportz: “Every country always tries to stick to their own strength. You know, when you go to Australia, they give their kind of surfaces. When you go to New Zealand and England, they prefer to play against the conditions that are suitable to them.

So, I mean, it's a myth today that we are playing spin very well, and it's a spin-friendly country, and we bat well against spin. But it's gone on those days where, you know, we used to play hours together, hours together to get that 250-300 runs on the board. But things have changed; I mean, that's not happening. See, we are no more a spin-friendly country.”

MSK Prasad says Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin may be India’s last quality spinners

The former Indian chief selector further warned the team by claiming Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin may be the last of India’s true quality spinners. The former selector lamented a lack of emerging talent, expressing concern that current domestic spinners favor flat, defensive bowling aimed at maintaining economy rates over taking wickets.

With the art of spin bowling seemingly on the decline, the future of India’s bowling attack appears uncertain, according to the former Indian wicketkeeper-batter. He also claimed current bowlers are more focused on their economy rate.

He raised the alarm bells over the future of spin attack for the Indian cricket team, as he has not yet seen any quality spinner in domestic cricket that can take forward Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin’s legacy.

MSK Prasad stated: “I think, probably, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin will be the last generation of those quality spinners. After that, we will always be looking at people who will be a mystery sort of a bowler or people who will be a quickish sort of a bowler bowling six different varieties in a Test match. I think slowly, somehow, that art, the quality of art of spin, is waning drastically.”

MSK Prasad slams domestic spinners' mindset on Economy over Wickets

The former Indian chief selector claimed that there are no quality spinners even in domestic cricket presently like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Prasad revealed that he was a talent head for quite some time, and he had never seen any spinner beating the batters in the flight, as everybody wants to bowl flat, flat, flat.

Citing the reason behind the mindset, MSK noted that the current bowlers are thinking about their economy rate and the most shocking thing for him is that even in a Ranji Trophy match, the spinners are not that special. At the end, Prasad admitted that he wouldn't mind giving 100 runs and picking 5 wickets, but the things are changing now drastically.
