Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has opened up about his snub from the Indian team for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. He said that he had some issues with the selectors from the early days of his career which potentially was the reason he wasn’t picked for the team despite performing well.
It’s fair to say that Ambati Rayudu is one of the most underrated players that played for India at the international level. After being dropped from the team early on, he made a comeback in the squad after his breathtaking performances in the IPL 2018, where he scored over 600 runs.

But when the squad for the tournament was announced it was a big surprise as Ambati Rayudu wasn’t named in the squad with the chief selector picking Vijay Shankar ahead of him, touting the reason that the all-rounder is a 3D player. This made Rayudu furious and he posted a cryptic tweet, targeting the 3D word.

Ambati Rayudu said that he was a bit surprised that the all-rounder took his place and he was quite disappointed as the management prepared him to bat at No.4. He admitted that had Ajinkya Rahane taken his place, he would’ve accepted that decision. Speaking to TV 9 news Telugu, he said:
“I was on a flight when the 2019 ODI World Cup squad was announced. Then IPL happens. I was very disappointed when I saw the news right after landing the flight. There are already indications that I will not be included in the team. I was a bit surprised to get an all-rounder that took my place.
“Going to play the ODI World Cup? Or selected a team to play a league match? It seemed They prepared me to bat at number four. I would not have felt great if players like Rahane were taken to fill the position when I was dropped. But choosing an all-rounder without any proper knowledge infuriates me.”

“Only MSK Prasad should tell the reason behind this decision,” says Ambati Rayudu
Ambati Rayudu opened up about the 3D player saga as well. He said that that tweet from MSK Prasad made him impatient and that’s why he posted a cryptic tweet. He admitted that people lashed out at Vijay Shankar but that wasn’t his fault and if anyone is to be blamed it’s the former selector. He explained:
“MSK Prasad’s comments about being a 3D player made me more impatient. In that anger, I tweeted that I would watch the game in 3D glasses. Everyone trolled Vijay Shankar. But I didn’t tweet against him or MSK. I blasted satires on the manner of Team India selection. People could not understand this and cursed Vijay Shankar. Of course, there is nothing wrong with him. Just a player waiting for an opportunity like everyone else,”
“I did brilliantly at No. 4 on the tour of New Zealand before the ODI World Cup. I believed that I can excel in England where there are such conditions. But I was surprised that the selectors chose the all-rounder instead of replacing the number four when they left me out. Only MSK Prasad should tell the reason behind this decision.”
Ambati Rayudu recently called time on his career. He last played for the Chennai Super Kings in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He ended his career on high as the team won their fifth title.
