Eoin Morgan, England’s limited-overs captain, will decide when to stand down, but the 35-year-old is still “a long way off,” according to newly-appointed white-ball coach Matthew Mott.

Morgan became England’s white-ball captain in December 2014, leading the side to the Twenty20 World Cup final two years later and then to the 50-overs World Cup in 2019. However, in his previous 24 white-ball innings for England, he has only one half-century, and Mott is desperate to re-establish his value.

Eoin Morgan Always Wanted To Be Picked As A Batter: Matthew Mott

“He always wants to be picked as a batter on form and merit,” Mott said “When he feels that’s not the case he will step aside.

“I think that’s a long way off being at that point.”

Morgan’s form, which will become 36 this year, might be a problem for England ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November, but Mott believes he can soon return to form.

Morgan’s successors have been predicted to be Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali, but Mott, who begins his stint with the first of three one-day internationals against the Netherlands in Amstelveen on Friday, has no intention of pushing Morgan out.

“Great players go through runs at different times and sometimes you flick a switch and it turns and you wonder what all the fuss has been about,” the coach said.

“Definitely watching him bat in the nets he’s in pretty good positions and going well. You can already tell what a profound influence he has on this group. He’s got a lot of great cricket ahead of him.

Morgan has been England’s white-ball captain in both forms for over a decade, and he is generally credited with the team’s success after they failed to qualify for the knockout round of the 2015 World Cup.

Morgan is going through a slump in his hitting, since we haven’t seen him at his peak in over a year. With each passing year, the England captain’s batting average in the shortest format has dipped, reaching 16.67 in 2021.

Morgan played the first two T20I matches against West Indies in early January but was later ruled out of the five-match series due to a quad injury. Former England captain Michael Vaughan urged Jos Buttler, a wicketkeeper-batsman, to take up the captaincy from Morgan.
