Neeraj Chopra's Gold Medal Win Bigger Than India's 2011 World Cup Win: Harbhajan Singh

Veteran Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh opined on the gold medal achievement by Neeraj Chopra on Saturday in the Tokyo Olympics. The cricketing fraternity was in awe of Neeraj Chopra, who brought India’s first gold medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. But Harbhajan Singh went a step ahead, claiming it is more significant than India’s 2011 World Cup victory.

Neeraj Chopra covered a distance of 87.58 meters, preceded by 87.03 in his first. It proved to be a golden throw, while the 23-year old produced a distance of 80 in his third try. However, Chopra fouled in his fourth and fifth opportunities. The closest to his 87.58 meters was 86.67 meters by Czech Republic’s Viteszalav Veslay.

It proved to be India’s seventh medal in this year’s Olympics, bettering their six earned in the 2012 London Olympics. It was also the nation’s first gold in Athletics. As a result, BCCI and Chennai Super Kings decided to award him 1 crore each as cash prize. Before that, Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in weightlifting, PV Sindhu snared bronze in Badminton, followed by the men’s hockey team doing the same. Bajrang Punia also won a bronze medal in wrestling.

Harbhajan Singh, speaking to Sports Tak, stated that Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal win is bigger than India’s 2011 World Cup win. The off-spinner was part of India’s squad when the men in blue lifted the trophy after 28 years and played an instrumental role. He took nine scalps in as many games.

Gambhir, also part of India’s squad of their 2011 World Cup squad, also feels their title win is nothing compared to Chopra’s gold medal.
