Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his disappointment over playing just one match in the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

The tournament began in a remarkable fashion for the senior spinner. Just before the start of the competition, he earned a sensational recall in the ODI team despite falling down the pecking order. Things only got better when he was named in India’s playing eleven for their tournament opener at his home ground MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

In his first ODI World Cup match since 2015, the right-arm spinner picked up 1 wicket for 34 runs in his 10 overs as India bowled out Australia for 199. However, the delight soon turned into despair as Ravichandran Ashwin was dropped from the playing eleven straightaway after that game and did not play any more matches in the competition which was likely his last-ever World Cup.

Ravichandran Ashwin on playing just one game in World Cup 2023:

With the World Cup done and dusted, Ravichandran Ashwin said that he never thought his journey in the World Cup would end after just one game. The senior spinner also stated that he was in good rhythm but it was still not enough to force a way back into the playing eleven as India preferred Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja ahead of him.

“Never thought that my run at the World Cup would end after playing one match in Chennai because I was bowling with good rhythm,” Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“My return was supposed to come against New Zealand at Dharamsala, Hardik had a heartbreaking injury. Hardik Pandya was an important figure because we did not have an all-rounder to replace him,” he added.

Speaking further, Ravichandran Ashwin heaped praise on the team for displaying an entertaining brand of cricket throughout the World Cup before the heartbreaking loss in the final.

“Both Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma said that they had well-laid-out, strong plans. This World Cup had us playing an exciting brand of cricket,” Ashwin said.

Team India’s 10-match winning run in the World Cup came to an end with a disappointing 6-wicket loss to Australia in the final. The Men in Blue will be in action once again on Thursday (November 23) when they take on Australia in the first match of the five-match T20I series.
