Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh since his retirement has taken subtle digs at the BCCI for not allowing the World Cup winners of 2011 to never play together again. In the same reference, he was often asked about his relationship with MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper. Harbhajan was a part of the 2011 Indian team that won the World Cup under Dhoni. But the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina did not play together again after that.

Harbhajan Singh now has come out in the open once again clarifying his stance on his relationship with Dhoni. In an exclusive interview with News 18, Harbhajan said that he and Dhoni are good friends. When further asked to explain, Bhajji said that the above-mentioned players did not get the backing from BCCI which Dhoni did.

“See, everyone interprets a quote differently. I just wanted to convey that a lot of things could have been better post-2012. (Virender) Sehwag, me, Yuvraj (Singh), (Gautam) Gambhir could have retired playing for the Indian team since all of them were active in IPL as well. It is ironic that the Champions of the 2011 team never played together again! Why? Only a few of them played in the 2015 World Cup, why?” he asked.

Harbhajan Singh further said that he blamed the BCCI for separating the players and not Dhoni. Dhoni played two more World Cups for the 2011 World Cup while the others had to retire much earlier as they were not given enough opportunities post-2012.

“No, not at all. I have no complaints against MS. In fact, he has been a good friend all these years. I have a complaint to the BCCI, the sarkar (government) of that time. I call BCCI sarkar! The selectors of that time didn’t do justice to their roles. They didn’t allow the team to be united,” he said.

He blamed the BCCI for giving chances to new players when the veterans were still at the peak of their form after the 2011 World Cup win.

“What was the point of bringing in new guys when the greats were still around and delivering? I once confronted the selectors on this and their reply was it wasn’t in their hands and then I asked why they are the selectors, then?” he added.

Harbhajan was a part of the 2007 and 2011 World Cup-winning Indian teams led by Dhoni. He also played for the Chennai Super Kings under Dhoni in 2018 winning a title together as well.
