Indian skipper Rohit Sharma praised Jasprit Bumrah for his exceptional performance during the second Test match against England in Vishakapatnam. Rohit Sharma described Jasprit Bumrah’s spell as “unreal” and crucial for India’s comeback in the recent home series.
The Rohit Sharma-led team suffered a 28-run loss in the series opener in Hyderabad, despite securing a 190-run lead in the first innings. Heading into the second Test, the home team faced added pressure, particularly due to the absence of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja.
Jasprit Bumrah Spell At Vizag Was Unreal – Rohit Sharma
Reflecting on Jasprit Bumrah‘s remarkable performance in the second Test, Rohit Sharma highlighted how his spell in the first innings turned the tide of the series. Sharma praised Bumrah’s ability to excel on a challenging pitch with soaring temperatures.
“That Bumrah spell at Vizag was unreal. On a flat pitch and 35-36 degrees, it is nearly impossible for a fast bowler to bowl that spell. And then comes Bumrah, who gets the ball to reverse both sides and brings the team into the game. I have never seen any fast bowler in India bowled the way he has bowled and got us those wickets,” Rohit Sharma said in an interview with team45ro.
The Men in Blue amassed 396 runs in the first innings, with the help of a double century from Yashasvi Jaiswal. The visiting team made a promising start in their response, with England reaching 114-1 after 22 overs. Zak Crawley showcased excellent form at the crease.
Bumrah, following Axar Patel’s breakthrough, swiftly dismantled the English middle order with the old ball. He executed a masterful setup against Joe Root, leading to his dismissal caught at slips, followed by a remarkable yorker that uprooted Ollie Pope’s stumps.
The pacer claimed key wickets, including Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, and the tailenders, securing a significant lead for India. With an impressive haul of nine wickets, he was rightfully awarded Player of the Match for his pivotal contributions to the team’s victory.
Bumrah continued his stellar performance in the second innings and claimed three more wickets, contributing to India’s 106-run victory and leveling the series. Team India secured victories in Rajkot, Ranchi, and Dharamsala, winning the series by a 4-1 margin.
There Was Jasprit Bumrah and Yashasvi Jaiswal – Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma acknowledged Yashasvi Jaiswal’s crucial contribution in the first innings, where he stood out while other batters faced challenges. He highlighted the importance of both Bumrah and Jaiswal in bailing the team out and turning the series around.
“(Yashasvi) Jaiswal’s innings (209) covered half the percentage of the team’s score, while the next best was 30-40. For us to come back into the Test series and perhaps win the next three matches on the trot, someone had to put their hand up to bail the team out in the second match. And for the same, there was Bumrah and Jaiswal,” Rohit added.
The 22-year-old opener amassed 209 runs in the first innings at Visakhapatnam, while no other batter reached the half-century mark. The southpaw ended the series with 712 runs at an impressive average of 89, featuring two double-hundreds and three half-centuries.
