Sri Lanka lost by six wickets against New Zealand in the third and final ODI of the three-match series at Seddon Park in Hamilton on March 31. Following the loss, the Sri Lankan team has been knocked out of the direct qualification for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be played in India in October or November later this year.

The Dansun Shanka-led team will play the qualifiers for the first time in 44 years after failing to be in the top eight in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 Super League table. The top 8 teams will receive direct qualifiers for the marquee event, while other teams will go through the qualifiers. The visitors lost the three-match series 2-0, with the second ODI was abandoned due to rain.

“We were one down when I came in. It was a bit more nerve-racking later on when we were three or four down. One of the good things about this team is that we can bat a long way down, so I had full confidence that we would get the job done. It was nice to be out there at the end and knock off the runs,” said man-of-the-match Young.

Sri Lanka was awarded five points for the cancelled second ODI and fined one point for maintaining a slow overrate during their 198-run defeat in the opener. Sri Lanka finished the season in 9th place with 81 points, while South Africa and the West Indies are competing for eighth place. The remaining two spots in the World Cup will be decided through qualifiers, which will be played in Zimbabwe in June.
