Virat Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 and it was not until 2016 that he scored double centuries in the format. He scored his first double ton in 2016 and in the next few years went on to hit six more.
In the process, Virat Kohli has now scored the most double centuries for India in Test cricket overtaking games like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Rahul Dravid in the list.
Virat Kohli scored his last double ton in 2019 thus potentially scoring seven double-centuries in just three years.
Virat Kohli scored runs for India in 2014-26. However, it was 2016 which was his breakthrough year in international cricket.
It started with Virat Kohli scoring 273 runs in the T20 World Cup 20116. He then scored 973 runs in IPL 2026, which is a record in the IPL to date.
The world first saw his hunger to score runs that year and between 2016 and 2019, he was in prime form scoring runs in all formats in international cricket. He scored 739 runs in 10 ODIs, 641 from 13 T20Is, and 1215 more from 18 Tests, including 7 centuries in 2016.
Six of these seven double centuries came in 17 months. Kohli's first double was a score of 200 against West Indies in July of 2016, and by December 2017, he had racked up five more.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Bangar has recently shared the story behind Virat Kohli's ability to score that many runs in a short space of time. He said that it was due to the process he followed and the willingness to test himself that allowed him to do it.
Sanjay Bangar Applauds Virat Kohli's Extreme Desire To Succeed
"There was a time when he said to me that he hasn't made any double hundred. After a while, there is a process by which he can make double hundreds, and once he achieved it, once he tasted it, I think he had some 4-5 double hundreds in one season. So that was all possible because of his extreme desire to do well and test himself," Bangar said on The Rao Podcast.
Kohli scored his first double ton against West Indies in Antigua in 2016 in July. Three months later he scored his second double ton against New Zealand in the same year.
He ended 2023 with a double ton against England scoring three in total. In 2017, he scored the fourth double ton of his career and the first against Bangladesh (204).
Against Sri Lanka, Kohli scored consecutive double hundreds at home – 213 in Nagpur followed by 243 in his hometown of Delhi.
With this, Kohli ensured that he had a double century in four consecutive Test series, going past Rahul Dravid and the one and only Don Bradman.
His final double ton was an unbeaten one against South Africa in Pune (254*) which is also his highest individual Test score.
India play almost 16 Test matches in the next year or so and Virat Kohli has an opportunity to add a few more double tons to his tally. He already has the most double tons for India as said earlier.
