Renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle did the daunting task via Cricbuzz of picking an all-time India Test XI. Conjuring an all-time India’s Test eleven is never an easy task as there are a host of prolific players coming up every decade. Harsha Bhogle also had some tough choices to make and he named only two players from the current lot.

Harsha Bhogle started with two obvious choices as openers in Virender Sehwag and Sunil Gavaskar. The latter was one of the greatest opening batsmen as he was the first to breach the 10000-run mark in the format. On the other hand, Virender Sehwag scored more than 8000 runs in Test cricket and redefined the role of attacking play in the version as the top-order batsman.

The iconic pair of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar occupied the next two spots as they have more than 28000 runs in Tests. Dravid, known as The Wall, had the best technique and the bowlers found it exceptionally hard to break his defence. Tendulkar needs no introduction as he has the most runs, most centuries and is the most-capped player in Tests.

Harsha Bhogle went on to choose current Indian skipper Virat Kohli at number five, followed by his predecessor MS Dhoni. While Dhoni did not taste enormous success in the longest format, he still had an encouraging record. On the other hand, Kohli is a much-improved Test player after an initial few years of roughness.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Anil Kumble make up the spin-bowling unit as they are amongst the most prolific spinners India has had. Ashwin, who has scored five Test centuries, recently surpassed the 400-wicket mark in Tests. Kumble, India’s former Test skipper, is their highest wicket-taker in the format with 619. Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan complete the team, covering the fast-bowling department.

Harsha Bhogle’s India Test XI: Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Kapil Dev, Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath Zaheer Khan.
