PAK vs NZ: Babar Azam Becomes The Pakistani Batter To Score Most International Runs In A Calendar Year

The Pakistani team’s captain, Babar Azam, added a new accomplishment to his record on Monday when he surpassed the record to accumulate the most international runs in a single calendar year.
When the stylish batsman hit the 13th run of his inning against New Zealand in the inaugural Test match played at the National Bank Cricket Stadium in Karachi, he broke the previous record.

Babar Azam Goes Past Mohammad Yousuf
He broke the previous record of Pakistan’s batting coach Mohammad Yousuf made in 2006 when he went past 2,435 runs in 2022. Over 1,000 runs have been scored by Babar Azam in the test matches, 735 runs in T20, and 679 runs in ODI. Babar Azam finished last week’s Test series against England as the only sixth Pakistani to reach 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year.

The right-handed batter accomplished this milestone on the third day of the Karachi Test when his innings totaled 45. Babar, although was later dismissed after scoring 54. Since Younis Khan twice achieved this feat, Babar is the sixth batsman from Pakistan to do so. A Pakistani batsman has now amassed 1,000 Test runs in a single year for the seventh time.

Former skipper Younis Khan scored 1,179 runs in 2006 and 1,064 runs in 2014. Mohammad Yousuf tops the list with 1,788 runs in the year 2006. Other Pakistani batters on the list include Azhar Ali (1,198 in 2016), Inzamam-ul-Haq (1,090 in 2000), and Mohsin Khan (1,029 in 1982).
Babar Azam Becomes 4th Batter To Complete 1000 Runs In Test This Year
Only three other batters had 1,000 runs for the season prior to Babar. Usman Khawaja of Australia has 1,079 runs in 19 innings, Joe Root of England has 1,098 runs in 27, and Jonny Bairstow of England has 1,061 runs in 19.

The great performer holds the third-place spot in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) career-best rankings with 871 points.
Babar is in third place after fellow Australians Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith, who are in first and second place, respectively.
