Former skipper Shahid Afridi urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to back Babar Azam as captain of the national cricket team until the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be played in India. Shahid Afridi believes that the board doesn’t need to announce the vice-captain for the marquee event later this year.
There were speculations over the sacking of Babar Azam from the captaincy, but PCB Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi confirmed that the 28-year-old would lead the Men in Green across the formats. The right-handed batter is expected to be announced as the all-format captain of the team until the World Cup.

Should Go To India With Full Preparation And Confidence – Shahid Afridi
Shahid Afridi pointed out that Babar Azam needs to work on some areas to improve his captaincy, but the former all-rounder backed him to go to India with full preparation and confidence.
“They [PCB] should have announced Babar Azam captain till the World Cup earlier, so the issue of captaincy would have ended there and then. I think Babar still needs to work on one or two things which I can see. After that, the captain should go to India with full preparation and confidence,” Shahid Afridi said.

Don’t Think There Is Any Need To Announce A Vice-Captain – Shahid Afridi
Shahidi Afridi stated that the PCB should have faith and trust in Babar Azam to lead the national cricket team in the World Cup.
“I don’t think there is any need to announce a vice-captain [for World Cup]. There is only one captain, so only keep him in mind and let him do his thing,” he added.
Babar Azam is currently leading the Men in Green in the white ball series against the New Zealand team at home. The hosts managed to draw the five-match T20I series 2-2. He smashed his third T20I century against the Black Caps, becoming the captain with the most international centuries in the shorter format.
The Pakistan national cricket team is currently leading the five-match ODI series 4-0. The Men in Green became the No. 1-ranked ODI team in the latest ICC rankings. Babar Azam will be next seen in action in the fifth and last ODI match against the Kiwis at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday, May 7.
