Pakistan under Babar Azam‘s captaincy drew the Test series against New Zealand at home after both the Test matches ended in a stalemate. Despite Sarfaraz Ahmed’s stunning century in the second innings of the second Test, Pakistan finished on 304 for nine ending the match in a draw with the visitors one wicket away and the hosts 15 short of their 319-run target.

Pakistan did not win a single Test match at home during the WTC 2021-23 period under Babar. They lost one Test match against Australia at the start of the year and succumbed to a 3-0 Test series loss against England in December 2022. They are now out of the race to make it to the final of the ongoing World Test Championship.

Babar has been under pressure as a captain to win Test matches and the change in the administration with Shahd Afridi as the interim chief selector has added to it. In every press conference now, the 28-year-old has been asked questions about his captaincy and his inability to win Test matches at home. Babar was once again questioned on his captaincy after the second Test in Karachi by another Pakistani journalist.

Kuch log keh rahe hai aapki team pe grip kamzor hoti ja rahi hai. Dosti yaari ka silsila Pakistan team mein khata ho rahi hai. (Some people are saying that your grip over the team is getting weaker and your friendships are getting over in the Pakistan Cricket team)”, the journalist began.

Babar interrupted, “Which friends?”

Stopping Babar midway the journalist completed his question by saying “Since Shahid Afridi came, he has changed the vice-captaincy in ODIs, with Shan Masood coming in to fill in the role. Now it’s being said that even Test captaincy will be snatched away from you soon?”

This brought out a strong response from Babar Azam as he replied saying “Sir, you will only be knowing to whom is the captaincy going. I don’t care about this. My work is to perform in the field and make my team also perform.”
