Pakistan cricket team has plunged to new depths following their humiliating two-match Test series loss to Bangladesh, marking their first-ever defeat against the Tigers.
This whitewash at the hands of Bangladesh on the soil has seen the home team slip to the eighth position in the latest ICC Test rankings.
The home team has never seen themselves in this position since 1965. The Shan Masood-led home team’s downfall doesn’t stop at the ICC Test Rankings for the team, as they are also languishing at the eighth spot on the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table.
Embarrassing Test Series loss to Bangladesh pushes Pakistan to rock-bottom in ICC Test Rankings
The latest embarrassing 0-2 Test series defeat against Bangladesh has effectively upset their hopes of earning a spot in the ICC WTC Final scheduled for June next year at Lord’s.
The Men in Green's chances of making it to the WTC finals are all but over with their first-ever Test series loss to Bangladesh.
The series in Rawalpindi was a disaster from start to finish. the home team suffered a crushing 10-wicket defeat in the first Test, followed by a six-wicket loss in the second, sealing their fate for the embarrassing whitewash at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
The crushing defeats have exposed severe cracks in the hosts' performance and strategy, leaving fans and experts in shock and disappointment.
On the other hand, despite gaining 13 rating points, Bangladesh remained in ninth place, trailing the Men in Green in the ICC Test rankings.
However, Bangladesh’s historic 2-0 Test series victory has significantly boosted their position in the WTC 2023-25 standings.
Bangladesh now holds the fourth spot in the points table, just behind the table-topper India, followed by Australia and New Zealand.
ICC reacts to Pakistan’s nightmare in Test cricket
The ICC stated: “Pakistan dropped two places in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings to go to eighth position after suffering a shock series loss at home to Bangladesh."
"The hosts were sixth in the rankings table before the series, but back-to-back losses have seen them drop below West Indies to eighth with 76 rating points.
This is the lowest rating points Pakistan have had in the Test rankings table since 1965, barring a brief period where they did not have a place in the rankings due to an insufficient number of matches.”
Well, Bangladesh will now focus on their next crucial assignment, which is an all-important India tour.
The Tigers are set to face Team India in a two-match Test series, starting on September 19, with the first game being held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Pakistan will next host England in Test series
On the other hand, Pakistan would certainly regroup after their moral-crushing Test series loss to Bangladesh.
The Pakistan players will have a great chance to find form in the Champions One-Day Cup before their tough challenge against England.
They are all set to host the England cricket team in a three-match Test series in October and would like to bounce back from the recent setbacks.
However, England is in great form, and even though they crushed the hosts in their last outing in 2022 in a Test series, they will be aiming for the same outcome this time too.
