Former Team India batter Rahul Dravid emerged as one of the leading contenders to become England’s next head coach in the Test after the sacking of Brendon McCullum, who was dismissed from his position on July 12.
The England Test cricket team is currently without a head coach and a captain. Who will be the next head coach of the team? Multiple names are reportedly in consideration as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is evaluating all of the potential candidates.
Rahul Dravid is on the list of potential candidates to become England's next coach
Rahul Dravid appeared as one of the potential candidates to succeed Brendon McCullum. According to the Daily Telegraph report, Dravid featured on a shortlist of candidates considered by the cricket board. However, he is unlikely to take over a full-time role for a national cricket team.
Dravid in the list of potential candidates makes sense as the ECB is in search of someone who has great knowledge in red-ball cricket. Rahul Dravid is considered one of the best to play in the longest format of the game. With a calm personality, he could be the ideal candidate to take over the reins in place of Brendon McCullum. But the former Indian batter is unlikely to consider the job.
“Dravid has no desire to coach full-time, but the England Test job would allow him extended periods at home and the chance to help keep alive his favourite format of the game. England, at the very least, should gauge his interest,” the report said.
Why did the ECB sack Brendon McCullum?
McCullum’s stint as England’s Test coach came to an end after the 2-1 series loss against New Zealand at home. The cricket board backed the former New Zealand batter to continue his job even after the Ashes 2025-26 disaster, where the Three Lions went down against their arch-rival Australia by 4-1.
His job was at risk after the Ashes series, but somehow he managed to keep the position. If England had defeated New Zealand in the 3-match Test series, the scenario could have been different. As England suffered another Test series defeat, the ECB spotted "the time is right to make a change" ahead of next year's Ashes.
Brendon McCullum coached England for 49 Tests, where the team experienced 27 wins and 20 defeats. While the England National Cricket Team claimed 18 wins out of 28 matches at home, they got only nine victories in 21 Tests, including series defeats in India (2023-24) and Pakistan (2024-25).
Andy Flower is also in contention to succeed Brendon McCullum
As Rahul Dravid is unlikely to accept an offer from the England cricket board, former Zimbabwe batter Andy Flower remains front runner to become England’s next head coach for the Test format.
Flower enjoyed a fair amount of success during his first stint as the team’s head coach, taking them to the No.1 spot in the Test rankings. Under the guidance of Andy Flower, England claimed three Ashes series wins over Australia.
