Australia captain Pat Cummins has become the costliest player in the history of IPL after Sunrisers Hyderabad secured his services for a whopping amount of Rs 20.50 crores in the ongoing IPL auction 2024.
While Pat Cummins was expected to earn a lucrative deal after leading Australia to a World Cup triumph last month, not many were expecting such a deal for him especially in a mini-auction. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad stunned everyone and went all out for the Australian to sign him up.
Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians began the bidding for the fast bowler who had registered himself at a base price of Rs 2 crores. Royal Challengers Bangalore soon joined the race at Rs. 5 crores before Sunrisers Hyderabad put in a bid at Rs. 8 crores.
From thereon, the race was between SRH and RCB. Both the teams fiercely tried to outbid each other as Pat Cummins became the first player to touch the 8-crore mark in the ongoing auction. Eventually, SRH had their man as they signed him for Rs 20.50 crores.
Pat Cummins opted against playing in IPL 2023 in order to focus on the Ashes and the World Cup. The decision paid off as he led Australia to World Cup glory and also helped them retain the Ashes. Before the Ashes, he also led Australia to their maiden ICC World Test Championship title.
His last appearance in IPL came in 2022 when he played for Kolkata Knight Riders. He played just 5 games in 2022 and picked up 7 wickets in addition to scoring 63 runs that including a 14-ball fifty against Mumbai Indians. Pat Cummins has played in six IPL seasons and has plied his trade for only one team so far – Kolkata Knight Riders.
