England pacer James Anderson has supported the idea of promoting Pat Cummins as the next Test skipper of Australia. The 39-year-old pacer feels that Pat Cummins will be good at the job of leading the side in Tests. James Anderson, who has represented England in as many as 379 international games across three formats over the last two decades, has never led the team even once.
Tim Paine resigned from the post of Australia Test captain on Saturday after his involvement in a 2017 sexting scandal. Tim Paine, who led the Test side since March 2018, was engaged in an inappropriate sexting scandal with a female co-worker in 2017. As the matter came out in the public four years later, the wicketkeeper-batsman quit his Test captaincy of Australia.
Pat Cummins is A Leader Of The Bowling Attack, Why Not Give Him A Chance: James Anderson
When James Anderson was asked about his opinion on appointing a pace bowler like Pat Cummins as a captain, the England pacer mentioned that he thinks more bowlers should be captain.
“I think more bowlers should be captain. Bowlers do think a lot about the game, we are thinking cricketers now. The only issue then is trying to get the time off – when you’re off the field, you want to switch off, whereas if you’re captain you’ve got to watch the game and be in it and you can’t switch off maybe as much”, Anderson said.
James Anderson, who is also England’s highest wicket-taker in Tests as well as in combined three formats, also feels that Pat Cummins should be given a chance to lead the Australian side in Tests.
“I think he’d be good at it, you can see he leads brilliantly in the team, he’s a leader of the bowling attack and you can see he’s got that ability, so why not give him a chance. There’s lots of arguments why it would suit to have a bowler as captain, but it’s just not the done thing is it. Captains like to look good at first slip and look like they’re making all the field-position changes and doing all the good stuff. But I’m all for it,” James Anderson further said.
As Tim Paine has resigned from Test captaincy just a few weeks ahead of The Ashes 2021-22 series, selectors need to find a new skipper as soon as possible. The Ashes 2021-22 is set to commence on December 8, with the first Test match between Australia and England. Notably, Tim Paine has made himself available for selection as a player in the series.
Pat Cummins is seen as the most favourite option for Australia’s new Test captain. Cummins has executed the role of vice-captain for Australia across formats for a decent time. Steve Smith is another possible player that the selectors can go ahead with for the role.
