Former Australian cricketer Shane Warne feels that Tim Paine’s tenure as the Test skipper was already on the verge of coming under question, irrespective of the sexting scandal which led to his resignation. Shane Warne feels that Tim Paine’s performance as a wicketkeeper and skipper was not up to the mark during his three-and-a-half-year captainship tenure.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Paine resigned from the position of Australia’s Test skipper on Saturday (November 20) after one of his off-field scandals came to the public.

The 36-year-old cricketer was involved in a sexting scandal with a female colleague back in 2017. As the incident came out in the public four years later, Paine resigned from the post of Australia’s Test captain, accepting his guilt in the matter.

People Started To Ask If Tim Paine Was In Fact The Best Option For Test Team: Shane Warne

In his column for the Australian daily newspaper Herald Sun, spin legend Shane Warne said that irrespective of the sexting incident, Tim Paine’s tenure as Test skipper was already up. Warne also mentioned that many people had already raised questions about Paine’s efficiency as a Test captain.

“When you take a close look at his position at number seven in the batting order, and the other candidates to play that role, the other standout wicketkeeper/batsmen around the country and the runs they were making, there was a groundswell of people starting to ask if Tim Paine was in fact the best option for the Test team,” Shane Warne wrote.

Warne also pointed out that Australia’s historic 1-2 Test series defeat to India at home in January this year left everyone questioning Tim Paine’s role in the Test team.

“He had his moments during recent series — especially last summer against India — which left us all questioning his tactical nous and his actual playing role. It seemed that maybe his time was up. A lot of people were thinking that, including me,” the former right-arm spinner further wrote.
